Though sung at England matches, this is in fact the national anthem of the UK.
This is sometimes seen as controversial, both by the English (who feel that they
should have their "own" anthem, rather than one which represents all the other
countries in the UK as well) and by the Scots, Northern Irish and Welsh, (who
feel that the English
should have their "own" anthem, rather than one which represents all the other
countries in the UK as well). At the Commonwealth Games, where the countries of the UK compete separately, England is represented by
Land of Hope and Glory. There is also a school of thought that
God Save the Queen is a mournful and tuneless dirge which should be changed for something else anyway.
- God save our gracious Queen
- Long live our noble Queen
- God save the Queen
- Send her victorious
- Happy and glorious
- Long to reign over us
- God save the Queen!
